Planer boards and braid....
Just started trolling cranks for whatever will hit them. Got some planer boards but they wont work with my 10# braid.
Any tricks to using planer boards and braid?
Different release clips? Other ideas? Thanks!

I. Use cheap hi vis braid somewhere between 15-20 lb test tied to barrel swivel then 5-6 ft of mono in 6-8 lb. Never had any trouble. Maybe see if you can tighten the clamp or maybe wrap it twice

I love trolling cranks.

Twist your braid 7 times using your finger. Then attach your board on the twisted line.

Thanks for the help!! my boards look to have the same release clip on front and back. They look like the back clip in the video. Should I upgrade the front clips?

If you have a pin in the front clip it won't release the line. But if you don't you're good. It takes a little practice to get the twist right. I use seven turns. Then seat the line deep in the release. The further in, the more pressure is put on the line.

Last but not least, use Off-Shore brand boards. This is my preference but I bought another brand and could not keep the line set, even with the same releases. Again, this is just my preference because one brand worked (Off-Shore) and the other does not work.

Thanks LT ! I have tried the braid twist and it still pulls out. Braid is 8 strand smooth 10# so it is slick and tiny. Combine that with a different type of release than in the video and it might not have enough squeeze to hold that tiny line. Kinda hate to respool as the braid works great and has little resistance so cranks can dive deeper. At this point, different release clips OR respooling 2 rods might be the only solution.

I saw a video where a guy makes a single wrap around the front release after inserting the line in it. You could try that.

If I understand correctly, the line would not release with a wrap? Or would it?
Hmmm Ill have to try it next time I am out.
THANKS !

I use walleye boards and wrap over the front clip and back thru….they won't release, but I remove them manually and haven't had any issues. Keeps fish buttoned when fighting a fish on another line.
