Noticed when I received .45 ACP ammo recently Federal 230 grain HST's primers are smaller diameter than any other 45 ammo I use. What size are they compared to say, Golden Sabers, Gold Dots, etc.?

IIRC they can come with large or small primers.

Found this...

  • For decades, the standard primer size for.45 ACP was large pistol primer. A few years ago, Blazer started to use small pistol primers in their brass, and Federal has also started to load of their cartridges with small primers; the Federal brass is marked 'NT' for non- toxic. Both work but they cannot be mixed when reloading.

Isn't federal and blazer part of the same group?

Blazer is CCI. They are owned by the same company; Vista Outdoor. Which owns Federal, Remington, Speer and CCI brands. Vista Outdoor is a spinoff of Alliant Techsystems (ATK) who also manages Lake City.

Ukraine's military has been an ammo customer of Vista Outdoor since 2015. That's where our ammo is going right now.

For a self-taught primer, load a small primer into a piece of brass and fire it off inside in a darkened room
Repeat with large primer

Which flame went further.

Watch your load. The pressure variance may not be very much but pistols are not bolt action rifles.
