I would be careful, the different rating on loose powder is for the rate of burn. It has to do with the size of the granules and surface exposure.

Hence, pistol powder and rifle powder. I will stick with my FF or pellet.............thank you.

Some do...The difference is the size of the grains. Fg,FFg,FFFg & FFFFg are the most common sizes. Some like the finer grain and claim that it burns smoother. But you should be cautioned that if you get too fine of a grain then you could end up with breech or nipple clogging.

The more F's the finer the grain...Mostly is goes like this: Fg is for cannons and very large rifles and shotguns, FFg is ok for cannons but more for rifles and shotguns FFFg is ok for rifles but more for pistols and FFFFg is for cartridge and pistols...Alot of times you'll here guys talk about using FFFg instead of FFg but really the difference is minute. 100gr FFg = about 90gr FFFg
 
i use to use the pistol powder in my sidelocks,it always worked good but never tried loading it to the max powder charge either,mike243
 
You get a more "controlled" burn from larger granules. But keep in mind the burn rate changes the pressures as well, which has a direct link to bullet size, barrel length, etc.

The grain sizes have less to do with burn rates and pressures than they do with being able to be ignited by the ignition source. For example: If you used a charge of FFFFg in a cannon there would be alot of left over powder in the barrel because the ignition source of a fuse slow burns down a long ignition path into the charge. If you used a Fg charge in a pistol (which has a smaller nipple and shorter ignition path) you would probably blow half the charge out on the ground.
 
FYI, both cases of left over unburnt powder in the barrel and blowing half the unburnt powder out the barrel are extremely dangerous...Left over powder in the barrel could be ignited with any left over sparks and any sparks flying out the barrel could ignite powder blown out on the ground...Best advise is to use what your manufacturer recommends...mostly rifles will recommend FFg because it ignites well with the 209 and #11 ignition systems...

That is not true, grain size has everything to do with burn rate. Blackpowder is a surface burner. Check the fact.

I can see here that I have to admit when I am wrong. This is a classic case of thinking that you know what you are talking about and actually knowing what you are talking about (ya I'm bashing myself for posting something inaccurrate) I was correct about the uses of each size but not on the burn rate deal...check this out...
