Pistol optics

I walked into a deal on a S&W 629 Classic DX today. I was going to purchase a new 629 Hunter but ended up finding a cherry Classic DX for half of what that Hunter was going to cost new. It is drilled and tapped for a scope mount. I took the front and rear sights off it and plan on attaching a picatinny rail to it and then some kind of optic.

That's what I'm undecided on. Red dot style or a pistol scope?

I'm going to hunt some with this revolver and maybe do some target shooting. I was thinking maybe something like a Burris Fastfire 3 or Vortex Venom. I don't know how well one of those would hold up to a 44 Mag though. I've never had one. Any thoughts?

Can't speak from experience with scope on 44 mag. I have a couple of barrels scoped on Encore pistol. I like the ideal of red dot style on yours. I think it would handle the recoil. I have a Ruger Blackhawk I have been thinking about putting a red dot on. Usually when I carry it I am in thick cover and shot usually no more than 30-40 yards and just depend on open sights. Pistols are a lot of fun to shoot and a big challenge to shoot well. Quite an accomplishment to kill a deer with one.

I decided to give a cheaper one a go. I ordered the Picatinny rail mount for it...and after much looking, I decided on the Sig Sauer Romeo 5. We'll see how it holds up I guess.

I just ordered a Simmons hunter in a 2-6x32mm for my Super Blackhawk 44mag. We will see how it works out. How did yours turn out?

The Sig Romeo was a waste of money. Hard to describe, but the red dot in it is very very critical to having to hold it just right in order to be able to see it at all. The scope objective is very small in it too so there's little field of view. Not what I was expecting at all. Kinda like looking through a 1/32 size peep in a bow string. Might make you more accurate but not what I would want for basic target shooting and definitely not in the woods hunting.

I ended up taking the whole rail back off and bought a HiVis fiber front sight and I'm good with that out to 50 yards. That's as far as I have shot with it though. Ran out of ammo and gonna have to reload some.
