For those of you who have planted pine previously, did you do it yourself, or did you have it planted for you? I'm looking at planting approx 2-3000 pines next year and think I'd rather look into having them planted for me instead of spending the time and energy doing it myself. Do I just contact a timber company to see about getting it done? And would I be better off getting the seedlings myself thru the Dept of Agriculture? Thanks for the info!
 
500 trees, I would do myself. 1,000+ trees, I would hire someone else. It is amazingly brutal work.
 
What BSK said, my son and I planted 500 in a day and a half. I really need to do another 500. Hard work? yes but after a few years it starts to really pay off.

Agree. Through the Dept of Forestry, you can find vendors that will plant as well. Last I checked the going rate was $75/acre. I believe it was a minimum of 10 acres.

I pay a couple of boys from chruch to help me and plant around 500 to 750 a year myself. It is hard work but I love the results.

That rate includes seedlings, I plan on doing that one day once I have a 10 acre area ready for planting.
 
Something else you might consider is all the pre-planting prep and activity immediately following planting to improve seedling survival for your investment.

I recently had some ground converted/replanted; it was old pasture. First we dozed our firelanes and burned the field to remove as much competition as possible. We planted in late January and came back after spring green-up to spray with a herbicide and kill grasses that had sprung up (and would compete with the newly placed seedlings). Seedling mortality has been as low as I've ever seen...seems like every single one of the little guys are just absolutely thriving.

Total cost from beginning to end was about $89/ac for a stand density of about 700 trees per acre. In the end if this equates to lower mortality, greater ease of management, and better long term growth/yield it's dollars well spent. I've been very pleased with my forestry consultant.
 
Sounds like a lot of work, but what a payoff down the road, as far as cover for wildlife and future timber one day!!

I might come watch Mark!!! lol
 
My neighbor hired a man to plant them on his farm.. brought in a tractor with the attachment behind it.. planted several acres.. the deer at the tops of every single pine seedling and not a one survived.....
