Has anyone planted these in TN? I assume deer like their acorns? On the hunt for some sawtooths yesterday I found several 6 feet tall pin oaks for 5 bucks a piece and I was wondering. I would greatly appreciate any info anyone has on these.

Talk to your local Forestry Service they give all kinds of trees out to people this time each year.I just picked up about 100 trees and they are free.

Steven, Ive got 20-30 pin oaks on the farm. The deer hammer them. Alot of my oaks did not yeild much of a mast this year due to weather but the pin oaks did great. The deer do like em

I have some planted in my yard and they seem to be slow growing (good soil) . I would think that sawtooths would produce acorns sooner than Pin oaks .

Radar, yes I do believe that Sawtooths will produce quicker. I just am looking at having alot of variety for the long term because Im sure I will own my place and expand my boundaries there for a long time. I asked about the wet area because wikipedia said they liked creek bottoms and wetlands best and my place is all well drained mountain so I was wondering if anyone had had success getting them to grow in more well drained conditions.

Steven, my trees a mature, I did none of the planting. Most of the trees are bourder trees Off of row crop or grass feild edges where they get good water. That being said there are some on ridge tops that seem to do well too. I am far from an expert on trees but I can tell you from what Ive seen they hammer them.
