It's been hit or miss for me, at best. I prefer not to, but sometimes I do. I knew the spot pretty well, turkey hunted it spring and fall many times. I even passed through there a couple days ago trying to find some birds.
Well the setup looked good, except the deer passed by about 60 yards out and barely visible, but they stayed there a while. Turkeys came through the same area a little while later.
Climbed down and checked the area to see what held the deer there for half an hour.
Bunch of red oaks, a few acorns, nothing amazing there. Couple of fresh rubs, good area for deer to drop off ridge into creek bottom. Found fresh droppings, but still wasn't sure why the deer had been there for half an hour.
Looked up and saw the tree I was standing next to was a persimmon and was loaded. Looked on the ground and there was hardly any fruit. I did find one whole fruit and one stem that had the fruit eaten off. Leaves looked turned up too. I think the deer may have eaten most of the fruit this morning, but more is gonna blow off this afternoon with the breeze.
Obviously the only thing left is to pick the right tree to climb, and hope they're back this evening. I'll check back in here if anything happens.
