I had several deer come through Saturday morning. The first group was just outside of range and never would stay inside of a shooting lane for me to even consider taking a shot.
The second group came through at about 30 yards, and the lead doe closed to about 20 yards. I ended up shooting her slightly forward (apparently) of where I wanted, and the arrow did not pass through due to the opposite shoulder.
After about 45 minutes, it begain to rain lightly, so I proceeded with trailing her to make sure I didn't lose the sign. I picked up the blood trail and followed for a couple hundred yards. I heard her jump up in a small thicket. I made sure she wasn't just thrashing around, and then exited the area for a while. I came back with my dad and another volunteer, and we scoured the area for several hours. Apparently she stopped bleeding when she laid down.
We finally ran out of time and had to give up the hunt. That was the first deer that I've lost in 18 years (and only the second one, ever). Pretty bummed about it, but I certainly learned a few lessons. I bet I've replayed that whole scenario from start to back about 200 times in the last 2 days.
