I collected about 40 or so persimmons seeds last fall and have had them wrapped up in the freezer for about 3-4 months at this point.

I'd like to get them started but I'm looking for a good way to do this without spending a lot of money on 40 1-gallon pots.

How long should I grow them before planting where I want them? I saw a tree farm that grew their seeds in a piece of styrofoam with 6" deep holes cut in them. http://www.itascagreenhouse.com/treeseedlings.html

Do you think a persimmons could start well in there if planted when they get about a foot high?

Its best to scratch persimmon seeds with sand paper or a knife, they have a coating on them that keeps moisture out, the acids in animals stomachs will dissolve the coating allowing them to sprout

If you transplant them, you might want to put something around them to keep them protected. I put chicken wire around my 5' apple trees, and the deer still destroyed them.
