I got out to my lease finally and surprise. The place is simply full of persimmons. Several trees are really tall, healthy looking, loaded with yellow fruit, all about quarter size in diameter. Dozens at least from 12 to 20 feet tall. No pattern to them, just everywhere you look. No wonder the place is overrun with deer moving through.

I know I'm asking for it, and I will get it, but best time to hunt them is after the first hard frost, right? Or When?

No.

Absolutely not. The best time to hunt them is when the deer are eating them. That will be when they fall. That depends on which variety they are. One drops early as in right about now and one drops mid-late winter if they drop at all.

Deer eat some and don't eat some others and there appears to be no reason or pattern as to which they will eat.

Synopsis: Watch them. When deer start eating them, kill one. If they don't eat them at all, don't bother hunting them.

It is that simple.

The best time for humans to eat them is after the first frost [so i've heard] but deer will eat them soon as they hit the ground or if they are within reach.

The best time to eat the early ones is when they are ripe...about right now. The best time to eat the late ones is when they are ripe. That is usually in late November. Fact is, frost has nothing to do with it.

The deer will have already gotten all of the early ones if you wait till the first frost lol.

I've had several deer eat them from the tree in my yard.
