persimmon tree!

Found one on a place I hunt! Never had an opportunity to hunt one or hang a camera on one. Honestly I dont know mucb about them, I thought I heard years ago something about them ripening after first frost. But anyway, what do I need to know about them? Is it a good find if its the only one around?

That makes sense, thanks for your.input. I will definitely put a camera in the area before in waste a ton of time. The tree is full of them, and its located on a dam of a small pond right on a whiteoak funnel through the middle of a big field.

I've seen deer hit certain ones really hard and others they just let the fruit rot. If I was more inclined to figure it out I'd take a soil test at the trees they hit against the ones they don't just to see if it has something to do with the soil content. But I just don't have the time. I've got my camera on one that the deer are obviously standing up on their hind legs to pick the fruit off of. I should be able to pull that card tomorrow and can't wait. For some reason they hit the persimmons harder on our place that are in fields or edges. It has always baffled me.

I have seen some trees produce enormous amounts of fruit only to die that year; those trees will get hammered by the deer that year.

I've had a lot of luck hunting them in areas where there aren't many but you can usually find quite a few in my home area. One of my tracts literally has 32 female persimmons scattered around on 107 acres so it's not to good to hunt them there.

Poser is right. The coons cobble a lot of them up. If you've just got a really big one that's raining them you will see deer by them. I gather a lot up by hand and put them where I know there deer will be and I get a lot of pics that way.

Do a taste test to see if their ready. The greener the better.

I've had some big momma does hit one in particular hard. Every time it was dropping fruit and I sat on it - I saw deer. It could just be the spot.. or the tree.. I dont know.

I get excited when I find persimmon trees, but like others have already said, I never really have success hunting them.

However, have one successful spot at LBL that I like to hunt. Always had deer passing through and feeding under me. It was tree years before I realized there was a small persimmon tree that was drawing in the deer.

taste test....greener is better,,,,,hysterical I still chuckling.

persimmons are fruit, berries actually. and they have a lot of stuff inside them that if you dare taste before the berry is orange and soft and has a good smell, your face will pucker up like a cartoon.

If you find a persimmon tree the deer are hitting, it is probably too late. The fruit falls over a short period of time. What you do is mark that tree so next year you know.
