It takes very little effort to learn how to shoot This buck was shot the saturday after thanksgiving over 1/2 mile away. Had him on cam Monday morning and could tell he was in rough shape. Found him Tuesday afternoon noon a 100 yards from the camera sucombed to his injuries. Please learn to shoot and if the animal is beyond your capabilities dont pull the trigger. He was shot through the back leg/ham and took 4 weeks for him to die

Unfortunately, people take shots they have no business taking. They also will hunt with a rifle that was sighted in 5 years ago and use a new box of ammo that they have never tried in their rifle. I understand someone making a bad shot here and there, but that's a whole different topic.

It sucks.. but who knows what happened.. could have clipped a small nearly invisible tree branch and sent the bullet off course.. I know a lady who actually killed 2 deer with one shot.. bullet went straight thing one and hit another standing behind it..

I know exactly what happened, was in a wide open hayfield, dude took a pop shot while he was trailing behind a doe

Man that's a shame. Really surprising that coyotes didn't get on him. Sounds like you know the who and the story behind this deer being shot in the leg. People taking bad shots or shots they shouldn't, yep that sucks. Has the shooter been made aware, may not hurt to make him feel bad about his shot, IF he has a conscience....

That's unfortunate and undoubtedly Infuriating for you. You're not alone. I've seen it twice this season, one from a neighbor and one from a trespasser. I don't know why it's so hard to become competent with your weapon or making good choices but it sure seems fewer and fewer hunters these days care enough. I used to think hunters represented the finest of humanity, and believe that was once true. But these days I wouldn't try to make that argument.

The number of people who 1. DO not zero their rifle before the season, and 2. do not practice shooting all year, but then go into the woods always amazes me. Seeing something like this is incredibly frustrating.

I don't know the situation or the hunter but the folks on this site are not your average deer hunter.

Many hunters believe it's completely ok to shoot at a running deer. I've done it on deer drives as a youngster.

I have been at Walmart and a pawn shop where a "hunter" came in and bought a gun with a scope to go hunting in the morning! Very responsible!!

In that case the "hunter" needs an education on ethical shots. We all make a bad shot and if you haven't you will but I hate to see an animal suffer. It's our responsibility to end its life as fast as we can. We owe them that respect.

If a deer is running and you can't stop him pass always pass !! Oh but he was a monster !! Each and every deer you decide to shoot at deserves your best no matter if it's a 70 lb doe or a 200 lb monster buck . Yeah we make bad shots but and I am one to say I have but circumstances are different in some cases. Just throwning up and throwing a round at a deer hoping you can hit it is irresponsible. I have killed some running but I know when I can and can't make a good shot .

The last deer I took at the Antler Hunting Club (north AL) was shot like that. I saw it limping, then found out why after it was down.

Hung it up and started to gut him. I about puked from what was inside him. I can't smell skunks, but the smell from his insides - OHMYGOD!!!!

I left him for the buzzards, yotes and rats.

Hunters education 101. Prove your weapon and only take shots within the parameters of that proof. Those two simple criteria seem basic as can be but unfortunately every time I see or hear about a wounded or lost deer I know that hunter likely lacked at least one if not both.

I'd assume watch paint dry as to target shoot. Just doesn't appeal to me. But to be an adequate hunter requires ensuring your rifle is on and you understand your capabilities with it. Initially it may take a little time and a few rounds but going forward to maintain it only takes firing a round or two prior to season opener to ensure it's still good. It's not a big investment of time or money. Last time I bought a box of ammo for my deer rifle was before covid and I still have enough for another season or two.

Last year I bought a 350 legend for out of state hunts. With it I bought a lot matched case of ammo so that I never have to mess with it again. My grandkids won't have to either.

Practice for what? I'm not training for the Olympics. One shot at 100yds verifies if I can hit my mark or not. If so I'm going hunting. If not then I make adjustments until I can, and then I go hunting.
