Pear tree planting problem

I have two keiffer pear trees that have been in the ground for 3 yrs. They are roughly 12 - 15 ft tall and are growing well. The problem is that when I planted them I used good amounts of top soil and natures helper. NOW they are growing good, but need support (they are staked). Both trees can be swayed back and forth with considerable movement (when unstaked).

What do I do???? Clearly I used too much amendment, making them loose. What do y'all think?

Have you been neglectful in pruning? I have several that are that tall and don't have that problem. I'm not sure how much that effects the soil they are planted in, but just a thought.

No they are shaped appropriately. They are about 1.5 to 2" caliper, good size trees. I have had them staked every since I planted them, when I went to cut the ropes, I noticed that they are very loose in the ground. I though they have been in the ground long enough to root in.

I suggest you keep them supported with ropes for a few more years until the roots grow out past the hole you dug. Also, at some point the "natures helper" decomposes and the soil is firmer again.

Im trying to figure out how this happened.Did the dirt settle and the roots hold it up,keeping it from dropping? Resaon I ask is I almost wonder if you could add some more dirt.Maybe they are just real weak where the trunk meets the roots .

No,l the whole root ball wants to roll out of the ground if the tree tips over (from not being staked). They just have not gripped in enough, the soil I used was way too loose I guess.
