Paw Paw trees

Have also heard them called pow paw trees.. Anyone tried to transplant them ? I have a grove of them here in Cadiz close to the house , all sizes from 1 ft up to about 20 ft. Some bear fruit most every year. Looks like they like to grow in understory in what appears to be not too good soil. I would like to get some started on our place in Christian co on similar soil, any ideas ?

You will find them in almost all hollows in east Tennessee, They prefer the shady areas.

They are difficult to transplant. Most of the young are sucker trees. In the winter, dig/cut 3/4 around the small tree. leave it until the following winter 9this will allow root growth without transplanting and shock). Then try it. I called UK and this is what they told me. I had the same question.

Dont you have to have a male and a female too for pollination? Going to try and plant some myself. Good post. You can find them on ebay pretty cheap.

Well you need two different trees (not clones) to cross pollinate not necessarily m/f. If any of you live in middle tn (gallatin) I know of a nursery that is selling 4-5 footers. Cool tree.

Yeah, it is located down lock 4 rd i believe (links gallatin rd to 109) if you are coming down 109 from Wilson co, past poindexters its the road on the left (goes beside dollar general). The nursery is about a mile or so down on the left. They have several native species. They had 4 or five 4-6 ft trees I THINK they were like 19 bucks?

They drop early. The ones here are still a month or so from being ripe. Usually they ripen through sept.

Thanks T S . I know the deer lovem . they are not dropping yet and bow season opens Sept 4 in Ky. They draw the deer in like persimmons around here.

I just found 4 trees about 30 yards from one of my stands, will they still feed on them this year even though the huge acorn crop or will they leave them alone for the most part?

Its like persimmons. They will definately eat them. Are they bearing?

If they are dropping now, they will probably be gone by the time the season opens. Everything in the wodds will be eating them. coons and 'possums will get the ones on the trees and coyotes, foxes, deer, and everything else will eat what has fallen. I have seen huge crops get eaten completely gone within a week when they get ripe.
