I have an outboard motor that I need some information on if there are any mechanics on this site then I would like to pick your brain for a few minutes. My problem is that it is very hard to put into reverse, but if I take my finger and lift up on the little hooks (that keep the motor from raising up while in reverse ) then it will just about fall into reverse but if I don't lift them up then it is very hard to get into reverse. It's a 20 horse Mercury tiller drive with the shift lever on the side of the motor not in the handle. I'm curious if there is some sort of adjustment I can make to take the slack out.
