The season in MS started with seeing lots of signin some hens but zero gobbling! After 4 days we headed south to St. Cloud, FL. to hunt the Triple N ranch.
Arriving late Thursday evening left me with only 1 day to scout before the season opener in the northern zone. First listening spot was a bust. The second spot heard several hens fly down and 3 gobblers fired up. We now have a great spot for opening morning. Spend rest of the day looking around several other areas, all had great signs.
Opening morning we had mile and quarter walk to a fresh burn area with small swamps on either side of us. With the skies cracking daylight the birds fired up. We had about 7-8 on our right and 2 on our left. The right birds were gobbling hard with one bird gobbled around 10 times in a row, unbelievable. Sitting there silently the birds started fly down 5 after 7 and still gobbling. Couple yelps, here they all started coming our way and fast. Through the burned palmettos I can see blue heads darting around from our left and right. What's seemed like seconds two were 20 yds in front of us. I shoot and see him flop then he was running off, another shot, messed. I jumped up and gave chase and finished him on the 3rd shot. At 60 years old, didn't know I could still run that fast. 7:20 we were done
