Saw a orange buoy at the Watts Bar dam boat ramp today and was wondering what it was. Has two buoys tied together with a cable and the TWRA Emblem on both sides.

That is a research station for tracking Lake Sturgeon movement. These stations are set up throughout several TN river reservoirs. If anybody witnesses people tampering with the these, please contact TWRA or send me a pm with information.

All the info we obtain from monitoring these devices will lead to eventually creating a sport fishery for these pre-historic fish.

So is this a tracking station for individually tagged fish?

Yes. There are fish tagged on Chickamauga, Watts bar and Fort Loudoun. When the tagged fish swims by, it "pings" the receiver giving a date, time and gps coordinate of the fish. We hope to add more tags to fish this coming fall.
