Headed there next week, 15 year old son wants to catch some fish, any advice deeply appreciated.

Alabama state park pier. $8 to fish. We were down there last week, and had a ball catching blue runners(hardtails), just about anywhere up and down the pier. If its big game you are after,go to the end in the deep water and have a chance at some really big fish, bull reds, huge jacks, kings, spanish, etc. You can also catch whiting, ladyfish, etc. in the surf if you are an early riser before the swimmers descend.

I just got back. Like Stik said worst year I have had in 20 years. North winds, No schools of fish. Soaked shrimp and caught a few ladyfish, small sharks and catfish. Guys at J & M Tackle blamed it on the gill netters. Last year was one of the best. Tides were good so I don't know what is going on.

2 or 3 weeks ago, they were gang-busters. The same thing happened to me last year. Caught a ton, and then went back about a month later expecting more of the same, and zilch. At that time, everyone was blaming it on the "nep? tide", which is basically no tide at all, except that go okfishin says that the tides were good, so I don't know the answer!

If you wanted to keep a shark, these fish aren't legal anyway, but they weigh maybe 10 or 12 lbs, and they pull very hard! Great fun to catch. You also catch 10 to 15 lb rays. Very strong, but a nuisance to fool with. We use cut croakers for these fish.

I've been in Gulf Shores the past 9 days (leaving tomorrow). Last week we had some really good days, especially early mornings. We caught several jacks, sharks, a king mackerel, and I netted a couple bull redfish. Fought several other fish we didn't get a look at. Caught speckled trout in the Lagoon behind the condo, and caught whiting, catfish, and a baby shark in the surf.

sounds like a better trip than we had. i avoided the jacks and sharks but never hooked a king or red. i think next year's trip will be in july.

My dad, brother, and I drove down for a quick fishing trip the last week of April, and it was still very dead. Normally June is a great month, it just wasn't this year. I think the ridiculous amounts of rain had more to do with that than anything else.

If I had the flexibility to do so, I would just monitor the fishing boards and weather and make a decision on timing with shorter notice. Unfortunately, I'm stuck going during peak months, so I have to book a place early to make sure we aren't sleeping in the car :)

we were down for a few days the first week of may and i didn't catch a fish. of any kind! i caught 1 spanish during our week in june. this has just been a bad year all around. normally late april through july is great fishing.
