Honestly, I haven't paid a lot of attention to the Blackhorn 209 posts until recently. I have read several though. I have heard about people buying a special breech plug or maybe even drilling theirs out. Not sure about the last one. I have an Optima made before the quick release plug. I ordered a stock from CVA this week and I asked about a different breech plug. The guy on the phone said they did some testing and the one I had would work fine. Does this seem to be the case for those of you that have tried?

The original breech plug is actually better with BH209 than the newer quick release breech plugs.

DO NOT DRILL OUT A LARGER HOLE!

Get a #32 drill bit and simply use it to push into the back of the plug where the primer goes. This will clean out any excess buildup.

Buy Federal 209a primers...DO NOT USE MUZZLELOADER PRIMERS.

no its not, the hex head breech plugs are the ones that need modding due to the smaller flash channel. We had to add a .035" flash hole / 5-32 flash channel in order for them to be reliable.
 
Not been my experience. I've kept mine clean with the drill bit trick and use Federal primers with no issues. I talked to BH209 and they advised not to increase the flash channel size. This was in 2011 so maybe something changed?
 
sure has since then. They even recommend a larger flash hole in the .035" range. Things always change though when something new somes out and then us guys find better ways to improve things.

The BH209 QRBP so far has been perfect without having to mod it, simply due to the fact that western powders designed it.
 
My gun was purchased in 2008 I believe. I gave CVA my serial number when I ordered my stock. I am not to keen to the idea of messing with the breech plug. Cleaning it out good is one thing. I guess I will try the one I have like it is. CVA said I didn't need a different one. It may not be ideal but I don't see why they would tell me that if if wasn't the case because they would be missing an chance to sell me something.

modding the plug isnt hard nor dangerous unless you have no clue what you are doing, later on i could mod if for you as well. Waiting for my tools to arrive.
 
What has to be done to it, just drilled out? I haven't ever used the stuff or seen it used, so I am not really sure of the advantages. However, I am starting to wonder if the stuff will be worth all the hassle, if I have to mess with the plug and if I am going to get into having to shim things like in the other thread on here.
