optic for MP 15-22

I want to put some sort of optic on my MP 15-22.. but I just can't make up my mind. Scope or red dot?

It will be used mostly for just plinking around - distances inside 50 yards. Turtles, squirrels, etc...

I've never owned a red dot, and not sure if they're practical for my use. I also am unsure how "accurate" they are.

Not looking to spend a ton of money for something to go on top of a 22.
