what would happen in Tennessee if the following was proposed and accepted " hunters now self-regulate themselves so well, that I firmly believe the state could remove the limit on bucks all together and buck harvests would not increase."

Just asking.

To whatever extent it COULD be true initially, things would change every year more the opposite. The first year would be the year of the least impact.

I suspect it "could" end with a much larger illegal black market for venison, eventually taking us back to the deer herds of 1900;
OR, on the other hand, it could cause so much more killing focus on bucks, fewer doe get killed, causing a very problematic and severe over-population of deer, THAT resulting in things like "earn-a-buck" and "doe only" deer hunting (but more likely, government sharpshooters step in, "sport" hunting becomes outlawed).

I believe the best regs generally promote a more "balanced-sex" harvest. If buck regs are not more restrictive than doe regs, hunters will generally not kill as many doe. Just look at Unit L as an example of this. Most hunters may eat venison, but most do prefer to kill venison with antlers.

That's basically where we are now in my county, very few hunters follow limits/seasons/weapons restrictions. What does it do? Well you really only see deer out in fields visible from the road in daylight on places that are policed by the landowner heavily and you don't have much of a population.

For everyone wanting scientific data, this was stated in reference to Tennessee buck limits by a wildlife biologist. This is just one of many reasons why I struggle with basing everything on what wildlife biologist say.

Not all biologist agree with each. But if one biologist agreed with no limits I would have to question him/her.

my honest opinion

if there was a no limit season on bucks

the kill totals would rise quite a bit

maybe one or two bucks to the total, DA, no more. lol.

lol

depends on the year

08 i killed 3 mature big bucks in 7 days tagged out could of killed another 11 pointer and 2 more 120 class buck

i certainly would have (if legal)

15 it would of made no difference in my bucks for this year

Same for where I live. I laugh when people talk about buck limits. Alot of hunters around here shoot double their limit in bucks every year. I think they would try and kill 10 if the limit was 5. I know a couple that kill way over their limit in bucks every year, but will not shoot a doe for anything.

Who cares if a wildlife biologist said it if it has nothing to do with wildlife biology?

Some people view TN deer herd the same as TN wild hog problem. No matter what regs, you will never eliminate the herd. All I can say, deer are not hogs. And turkey are not deer. And quail are not turkey. Learning from the past will only make you better, and make for a better natural habitat for our wildlife.

Does not hurt Alabama and heck they kill more mature bucks than Tennessee . I don't rely much on statistics most are inaccurate . Just hunt guys .

Hmmmm. Interesting thought Snake.

Interesting when the limit was 11, was it state wide?
Wasn't as many ares with deer back then too.

Parts of the state would need restocked yearly

There are more people than you think that don't rely on government regulations to exercise trigger restraint or to practice QDM. I know some of the most vocal proponents of the limit reduction would, at least on occasion, kill three bucks themselves while demanding that EVERYONE ELSE be restricted before they would exercised trigger restraint. They are more common on this forum, but they are still in the minority.

How many people DIDN'T kill over one buck with the three deer (or now the 2 buck limit)?

I know where you're going with this-but anyway I don't think the results would be as radical as you might think.

Maybe for a time period, but like the 3 doe/day limit it would level back out once the new wore off. I'd like to see the statistics on how many hunters kill THREE does or more in a season-it might surprise those that think a lot of hunters kill three does a day for most of the season.

Of course nobody keeps on killing three a day all season. I don't think any of us have that idea. First of all, that's a lot of work after the killing's done. Second, we've had this "limit" for way too many years. You say "the new's worn off". Sure, but it also means that a lot of folks have already seen firsthand the results of shooting too many does. Of course, many large parcels of ground where there WERE too many deer now have better quality deer. I've heard this firsthand and sure, it makes sense. I get it. Why ELSE would folks like it? Anyhow, the obvious thing is that MOST folks, or the average hunter, simply won't have multiple OPPORTUNITIES at multiple does. Sure, that's the reality, so one might ask then, so why does it matter? The point is that the perception that we have "too many deer" isn't necessarily a good one to have for where it's not the case. Probably makes poachers feel better, for instance. It also doesn't mean it's biologically sound management...especially for so many counties and so much public land.

So folks on here argue ad nauseam about a single buck difference in a whole SEASON while the law allows three DOES to be shot everyDAY the whole dang season. How's that for some perspective? It makes no sense at all....unless you're hunting ground where y'all know who's shooting what and how many. TN Unit L is a textbook case of what they were talking about in the new Field and Stream issue regarding "over-management", and how limits are now often not biologically based.

a whole lot of dead deer.In 5 years the harvest numbers would be down a whole lot.I only want to kill enough deer to fill my freezer. And have enough to eat till next season. But im not sure about everybody else.
