First time in a long, long time I made an effort to get out opening day for squirrels. Shooting time was 5:30 ish and I got to the spot i wanted about 5:15 and somebody was there so I just let them have it. Went to the backup spot. Started hunting right at 6:00. Real dark and dew was dripping off trees everywhere so it was hard to hear em. 55 degrees overnight so perfect temperature wise.

Saw one moving far off and couldn't get close enough without spooking him. Finally found one small fox squirrel heading down a hickory and I connected with him. Had to make a pretty quick shot so I was thankful I brought the shotgun. That was it for the morning packed it up around 7:30. Going to make a concreted effort to go more this fall. Thinking ahead to a big pot of Burgoo with squirrel & deer to eat on during duck season.
20 gauge wing master, fixed modified with #6.

I ordered a vortex rimfire and rings that should be delivered tomorrow. Going to put that on the 10/22. Excited to sight that in and drag it around some too.

Beautiful morning to be in the woods, like you got in the woods before good light, the squirrels started moving really early, killed the limit before 7:00 was back home and had them cleaned and soaking before 8:30. Saw several more coming out. Lot of squirrels and plenty for them to eat here in Western KY.

I used to look forward to opening day of squirrel season and hunt mornings and evenings. When I grew up in Southern Illinois it was almost like deer season with trucks parked near every wood lot. Nothing like big old fox squirrels cutting hickory nuts raining down. Some of my fondest memories are squirrel hunting with my dad. The smell of off bug spray still takes me back to those days.

TnKen you the same who hunts the Shawnee hunts with sqaucks and a bunch of us former marlin forum members?

No. I grew up in Edwards and White counties. I can remember my dad going down there when he first started deer hunting. That was about the area that had a huntable deer population back then.

This was the coolest morning I can remember in a long time for the opener. Found a hickory they were cutting at right off. Killed one out of it and found another close by and we killed 2 out of it. Shortly after it seems like it just shut down. Between me and a buddy that were hunting together we killed 6. 4 other guys were hunting my farm and overall we all killed 22. Kind of down from some years but still a good time.

Found lots of hickory nuts on the ground. Going for a short hunt in the morning. Hoping to get out next weekend but have food plots to get in and the weekend after bow season opens so not sure how much more I'll get after them til late winter.
