I have hunted for 20 yrs now and this is the first opener I have missed at my place. I decided to go to the 200 acres i have permission to hunt on. I have bow hunted it 3 or 4 times this year and have seen some decent bucks. I went to a shooting house i have on the place and get in there and 2 of 3 window strings were broke. Crap. So i high tail it over to my tripod that i have in the middle of a big oak that fell. Going up i realized one of the big limbs had shifted down almost causing me not to be able to get in the stand. So things weren't going just as planned. But i was able to get in the stand and get ready. Had a little buck feed in front of me right at daylight. Then at 6:25 i decided to rattle a bit. So i grunted and rattled for a few mins and put them down. About as soon as i put the horns down i see a deer hop the fence to my left. Now on this farm it has so many deep ravines that it's easy to drive a 4 wheeler into and hide it without deer seeing them. So that's what i did. But this deer came running in from the entire opposite way i expected and picked up on my 4 wheeler that was parked. He was 50 yards and i was trying to decide to shoot or not. He spooked and started trotting away. He stopped one more time at about 125 yards and i decided to shoot. Perfect shot and he ran about 50 yards and piled up.
Definitely not my biggest buck and I won't sit here and make excuses of how i thought it was bigger, etc. He's tagged in and I'm happy with it and my 1st buck in 2 yrs. He's also the 1st buck I've ever rattled in. He came charging in and hopped the fence looking for what was fighting. Also my 1st buck I've shot with my new gun i bought off my buddy knightrider, and also the 1st buck I've ever killed on opening day. Going to buy some extra doe tags and have fun next week on vacation!
