Just became a member of onX,been using the free verison of Huntstand for several years and I liked it for what I needed.I'm a premium member now with onX and hadnt had anytime to explore how you do things because I've been making deer jerkey this morning and havent had time.If anyone wants to tell me things that you use on it I would appreciate your advice and how to do them,I'm sure I would learn faster how to use the features from you!Thanks
 
I just use for it for property lines and property ownership. Invaluable for that. And I'm shocked at how close the property lines are. A few times while mapping properties I've lost the property line. Pull up OnX and I can tell about where it should be.
 
If your going to be in an area where there is no cell reception you can download a map of the area ahead of time while you have good reception, and then while in the rural area ,with no reception, you can still use onX with the saved map. We used this feature hunting out west several times and it worked great.
 
I found the lines are fairly accurate, but educate yourself on who it shows as owners. Ive run across a lot of wrong names on parcels, including my own and even discrepancies on public lands as far as huntable or not.

Good to know when my OnX runs out,I will check on BaseMap!
 
Onx is a great app. I use for property lines. And to get to stands in the dark. Also to mark potential stand sights. It is really invaluable. A great investment. Especially for hunting public land.
 
It was invaluable to me when looking at new homes/properties; with the 3D mapping I could get a much better feel for it than just the overhead satellite pics. Also when looking for public hunting ground.

Haven't yet heard anyone say anything that OnX does which BaseMap doesn't.

Starting to wonder if OnX may be to the gps/mapping smart phone software
what Cuddeback is to game cams?

The most advertised?

P.S. I have absolutely nothing against OnX and liked it.
It's just when it came renewal time, I took a look at BaseMap,
and thought they were essentially the same.

I have no issue paying more for OnX if it's worth the extra cost.

Onx is great and up to date when I bought my house my name popped up over it about a month later. Not sure on the other one there in not a very technical person or know many different things I try to shelter from the world lol.

I think I use the tools a lot. I think the line distance is really accurate on there.
 
I swapped from Huntstand to onX several years ago. Took me a while to get all my stuff transferred over. Now with 6 diff states of hunting data in onX I have no desire to start over with something new 🤣

Yes, sharing pins is easy. Google scouting and transferring is a little more complicated.
I think if you google "tree line pursuits" he has a tutorial. I'll try to dig more into at the office tomorrow. It's been a couple years since I did it and all I did was transferred the data that someone sent me.
 
Direct link from OnX on how to import/export data. Basically in GE you'll mark your waypoints, make a folder in the places bar on GE then create an KML file to transfer directly to OnX. You may have to do this on your desktop to make it easier, not sure if the app still even allows this option or if its glitchy.

Good stuff, there's be quite a few times I've wanted to do that. I cross reference from onx too Google earth a lot and can see some things on Google I can't on onx
 
Teo things that took me a while to figure out:

1) Push the button once to center you on the screen. Puh it a second time and it puts a little blue cone in the direction you're going. Once I accidentally figured that out, following tracks and navigating got a whole lot easier!

2) You can send waypoints to others and they can see them exactly as you do. So if you update it or delete it, they see it, or don't if you deleted it. If they want to keep it for themselves, they have to copy the coordinates and create a WP on their onX.

I think it's important to be mindful that the property ownership is typically accurate, but not always the boundary lines. The boundary lines are taken from the County GIS tax map which relies on deed legal descriptions to approximate the property boundary lines. These legal descriptions are not always accurate due to bad/conflicting survey direction calls and therefore maps and boundary lines not always to scale.

They certainly aren't perfect, for the reasons you describe, but I've been shocked at close they are. If my phone's GPS shows I should be standing on a corner marker per OnX, I'm going to be real close. Generally within 25-30 yards, and I will easily see the corner marker from where I'm standing.

Yes Sir. No issue with the app itself, but with the tax maps. An example would be when I walked across a gravel road thinking the property continued. The neighbor came out and informed me I was standing on his property. I mentioned the app and he informed me the property I had permission to be on has an inaccurate survey legal that draws over into his property for approximately 5 acres. I researched it in the Register of Deeds office and he was correct. I still think it's a great tool 99% of the time.

IMO, yes.
Desktop Google Earth Pro and 3D are much more detailed in most areas. GE is probably the most updated content the majority of us have access to.
Onx to me is grainy and usually outdated.
 
Here is a screen shot of GE and Onx. I tried to do my house but my neighborhood isn't updated in GE, so that kinda throws out the whole GE is the most updated 😂
Of course the desktop GE pro might be more up to date, I haven't checked.

OnX has the 3D map but it won't show the property lines or owner. But if you click back to 2D it will. In other words, you can see both views as posted above using OnX.
