My cousin took a friend to one of my farms this morning. This buck was out at daylight following a doe. He's the same buck my 12 yo son almost shot last weekend. I thought he was a run down 5.5 yo when we had him at 175 yds last weekend, but he ended up being 7.5. We've never killed a deer over 5.5 in 32 years of hunting, so this buck is pretty special. His rack is below average, just a 7ptr that would score in the mid 110s, but the real trophy is his age! He has a lot less mass than I saw last weekend unfortunately

Congrats to the lucky hunter! Can you really tell with certainty that a buck is 5.5 vs 7.5? Not being a smarta$$ just curious myself since I don't ponder on age that much myself. If it gets my heart thumping I usually pull the trigger.

Apparently 1st and 2nd molars worn flat.... have to wait to get the whole jawbone from taxidermist, but if that's the case, it's pretty easy to tell the difference between a 5.5 and a 7.5

Age before beauty! The land manager side of you should be feeling pretty dang proud to have a buck like that taken off your property. Well done.
