Ok Guys some recommendations please.

Want to get a new caliber I can shoot as accurate as possible up to about 250 - 300 yds.

Was thinking a .270 WSM?

Already have a 300 Win Mag, just wanting something with a little less kick for the whitetail :)

It will be used for deer only.
 
Although the 270 WSM is a little lighter in the recoil dept I find it a good bit Sharper than that of the 300 WSM.Still a good choice,but so are alot of others 30/06 for example.You could try some lighter weight bullets,reduced recoil ammo or handloads unless you just have to have a new toy.

For what you describe, I'd rather have a .270 than a .270 WSM. .30-06 or .308 would be good too. No reason for a magnum for whitetail out to 300 yds. I've killed more deer with a .243 than any other caliber.
 
300 yards and in screams .308 to me. I have a 270 WSM and love it, but if 300 is your outer mark, a 308 can do that all day long, and in a lighter shorter gun.

I love my 25-06,,but inside 300 yards I would get a 308 myself,,I`ve made a couple shots with Ethans Model 7 308 with 20 inch bbl that has made a believer out of me,,
 
i WAS IN THE SAME BOAT YOU ARE IN, SO i GOT A 270 WM. AND LOVE IT!i WOULD NOT GO WITH A SHORT MAGNIM CALIBER, EVENTHOUGH i HAVE A 300WSM THAT i ABSOLUTELY LOVE.THE REASON WHY IS BECAUSE OF BULLET AVAILABILITY.IF YOU HANDLOAD THEN I GUESS IT WOULDN'T BE A PROBLEM.ANY BIG CALIBER ROUND WHETHER ITS A 300WSM, 308, 270 ETC IS EASILY A 300-400 YARD SHOOTER! i HAVE KILLED 3-4 DOES IN ONE MORNING AT 387 YARDS WITH MY 300WSM.IT'S ALL ABOUT KNOWING YOUR WEAPON THAT YOU ARE USING!
 
I would have to agree w/ W.Seay WSM cal.s are the way to go .243, .270, 7mm, .300. I have the 270wsm and love it. Some might say that it is over kill at that range, but I just like to see them drop faster! ha ha

The 270 Winchester is a good rifle cartridge for what you want t do , the 7MM / 08 would be a good one too.
 
Hard choice since you already have a 300 Win Mag, which is my favorite rifle, although it is WAY too hot to enjoy shooting it today.

I have been considering same thing lately. All good advice above. I lean towards a 280 in theory or 7/08. But the 308 makes a lot of sense. Cheap ammo and cheap reloading and all of your cleaning equipment for 300 works for 308. Probably can find any brand or style of 308 used for a reasonable deal. And I am really getting tired of paying too much for ammo and supplies.

And I would love to have a Nosler 48 in 270WSM. Why I don't know...I think the marketing got to me. :)
 
I have hunted deer with both the .270 and .308. I prefer the .270 and finally sold my .308. Both worked fine, it just seems that deer shot with the .270 go down faster. I have never had to trail a deer shot with my .270. They always dropped in their tracks at the shot.
 
Purchase made....

Went with a Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker .270 WSM. Higher ammo, but I really like the gun. Going to top it off with a Leupold VX-III B&C Recticle 2.5x8x36 scope I already had not being used.

Thanks for all the advice. Maybe if things keep going good, ill add a .308 to my collection later this year as well!
 
I could live with that choice, though since I already have an A Bolt in .270, I'd have gone with the X Bolt for the new gun. Nothing wrong with the A Bolt, though. A few years ago it was the most accurate production rifle, though many have caught up and surpased it lately. But in a hunting rifle, how much difference is there really between 3/4 inch groups and 7/8 inch groups?
