Can you age this deer?

Sorry about the pic but its the only one i got.

It was shot this past weekend in Illinois by a guy i know. It gross scored at 165. I know it's not a good pic to judge age. But im curious on what you think.

It was aged and i will post it later. Spoon your guess doesnt count. :whistle:

Considering the hunter is about 3 1/2 feet (as far as his arm will reach) behind that buck, it's hard to get a realistic perspective. ;)

classic "camera con job" lol, I learned that trick in Grand Junction Colorado in 1985 from "Fred Bears son-in-law"

Like I Said! I know this wasnt a good pic to judge by! (Insert roll eyes here.) But this deer did score what i said. I seen this deer in person this past Monday in Illinois.

The main thought i was looking for was a average year people would think a 165" deer would be.



This deer was aged at 2 1/2 years of age!
It dressed out at 140 lbs.
Pretty nice for a 2 1/2 year old for Illinois

That's a great buck for any age. Some bucks never attain that size with more age. To answer your question above, my guess would be that "most deer" (???) in an average place wouldn't grow antlers that big until they are at least 3.5, but more like 4.5 - 5.5 years old. At least I believe that to be the case where I hunt in the NC piedmonts.
 
One heckuva 2.5 yr old and very uncommon anywhere in the country!
I hope he bred some does before he died!lol

I wonder if that made any difference? I dont think any of the studies that have been done have ever really proved that supplemental minerals grow larger racks.
 
Ill guess 3.5 since they get bigger sooner up there.....hard to really tell but could maybe be more?
