Took my neighbor and his son this morning on the juvenile hunt. Gobbling was a little slow ended up hearing 7 different birds before we had to come out for his ball game.
Found 3 with the Hoot'N Stick roosted within 100 yards of where we started from.
I wanted to set up in a spot but the Dad was afraid that they wouldn't come down the haul road. I felt as they would but I said ok so we eased in tighter and set up I didn't like it as well because it would be a very close shot. I figured they'd do as what happened. Come up right on top of us. I stayed 15 yards behind them and began to call. They gobbled a few times and hushed.
I whispered and said they're coming. Sure enough Pssstt Vrooooom they drummed 20 yards from us for what seemed an eternity. I purred and scratched the leaves and they let out a thunderous gobble.
Just over the road bed. I could see the fan tips.
The young hunter and his Dad made an adjustment to move theirselves to their right which made quite a bit of noise. They stopped drumming and went back down in that steep holler that they came up.
I made another move with them down the ridge to a low gap and got them to answer one more time but they weren't coming back.
I wish we had set up where I wanted to. I feel he would have gotten a shot off but it didn't happen.
He did get the shakes and had a big smile on his face he had a good time.
I had a smile myself because I've missed those sounds and it felt dang good to call em that close and have them drumming and jar the ground when all 3 gobbled beside us.
I'm going to try and take him back behind the house before church tomorrow morning.

Re: Oh so close

That sounds like a fine hunt to me, kill or no kill. I hope y'all connect in the morning, keep us posted on how things go. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Oh so close

Been on many of those oh so close hunts. I always counted them as a success. As a matter of fact a couple of my most memorable hunts a trigger was never pulled. Sounds like y'all had a awesome time, and the smiles says it all. Good luck tomorrow!

Well went this morning. No roost gobbles at all. Finally struck one at 7:30 with the Dawkins Stoned Aluminum.
He came across the field gobbling ever other step. We had a hen that came out he was going towards her. It was beautiful got him within 50 yards and he picked off my shooter. He was a little bummed but it was still another great hunt. At least he had an opportunity to have turkeys come in both mornings and got to see and hear them do their thing.
I'm happy for him even though he didn't carry one out.
I'm ready for the 2nd now it's going to be a long week!

Sounds like he got a good dose of turkey hunting. Good for you for taking a youth!

Sounds like the stoned aluminum has a promising future!
