So after church today we went to my father in-laws to do some shooting. I took my Savage 10 308, Remington model 7 7mm-08 and Savage 10mlI. I'd shot the Smokeless the last 2 weekends but just wanted some more alone time with her before season opens.
Anyways, the Smokeless shot lights out, then I check zero in the model 7. Couple of small adjustments and its drilling bullseyes. Then comes time for the 308.
I had decided to change ammo this year from the Hornady American Whitetail 150 grain to the same bullet in 165 grain. I rarely get a passthru with the 150 and like to take high shoulder shots so I thought I'd try the 165s this year. First two shots miss the target completely. Confused, I shoot 3 more that make about an 1 1/2" group around the bulleye. Then the next two are about 8-10" wide left, then it puts a couple more back towards the center. All this without me making any adjustments. I figure has to be scope or mount problem.
So I take the rifle home and pull it apart. The DNZ base and rings seamed really good and tight and the scope is a proven Vortex Viper that I've used the last 2 seasons. Get everything back together and head back to my father in laws farm with some other types of ammo to try. I used 150gr American Whitetail and Sako 150gr Super Hammerheads. Shot 4 shots each and both types shot into nice little groups around the bullseye. Was suprised I didn't have to re zero after removing the scope.
The only thing I can figure is my gun really hates the 165 hornadys or there is a problem with them. I've never seen impact points bounce like that that wasn't a broken or loose scope/mount but everything was super tight. Anyone ever seen ammo cause this sorta problem?
