Ocellated turkeys

Anyone else see them at the NWTF show? Several full body mounts, it was cool to see them in person. I wonder how much a trip costs to fly down there and hunt them

The people I saw offering them at the show were around $3k

Most all of the Ocellated birds were from my trip down to the Yuccatan a couple years ago. Several of us went and Cally with Hazel Creek just brought the birds to us to pick up at the show.

The best hunt you can buy in my opinion. It's not cheap by any means but a great hunt. Yukkutz Hunting is where they came from and they were at the show. The cost is $3,000 for one bird and an extra $1,000 for a second bird. The guy stays booked. On Saturday evening he said he only had 4 openings for the 2016 season and was already booking hunts in 2017.

He runs a great operation with great accommodations, food and awesome hunting. He has a lot of birds. They hunt Mennonite farms where they farm beans, corn and sorghum. The birds really come to the crop fields.

REN they sure look like turkeys to me. Just missing a beard and a little smaller but even the wing feathers look very similar

i don't mean by look i mean by behavior. they are really nothing like a eastern as an example, at least not they type of behavior you expect to see from a US turkey. Wild ocellated are more like free range chickens from a behavior standpoint then they are of an eastern turkey.

Ha ha Roost.... Y'all know if the money was lying around, any of you would fly down to yucatan and kill one of those "chickens" and get it mounted.

I'm curious why Goulds? If I had to choose one from North America other than eastern, I'd probably go Merriams for the size and the plumage. I don't know much about Goulds

Merriam are my fav I just put Goulds in the exotic like ocellated is all. Ocellated are the last in my book just due to how you hunt them.

i see what you're saying, but I gotta say the hunt must have to be a completely different experience even if you shoot them on a Mennonite feedlot. You're still flying to a tropical region and shooting a really cool looking turkey in a foreign environment. I would rather go and shoot one easily than spend all the money and run all over the woods like I do with easterns, and then come home empty handed. But about those merriams I am with you, it's on my list and would be much cheaper to hunt.

Right now Goulds are basically not huntable in North America, though AZ and NM are making come backs I believe. Rios and Merriams can all be had on public land in many states.
