Anyone ever had any luck planting oats got a free bag and was just wondering if I should plant them strait or with another food source ie wheat clover turnips .

My favorite! Use them every year! I was in a ground blind and had deer all morning. Had to run them out Sunday morning so I wouldn't miss church

Plant them with or without another crop. I prefer with another crop, as oats tend to get freeze-burned late in the season.

Planted about 1/4 acre on a small ridge plot. Inside the utilization cage there about 5-6" tall outside their 1-2". Deer love them.

What BSK said...............with wheat and about 60/40 wheat to oats seems to be a great mixture. Also I like to add Advantage white ladino clover in as a complement...........cant miss.

This year, I'm trying a mixture of BFO's with Dwarf Essex Rape at about 3 lbs per acre..

Normally, I have success mixing winter "Bob Oats", Winter wheat, with Ladino clover.

Got a good deal on the BFO seed, so I figured I would give it a shot this year.

Yes Sir, I've tried the Buck Forage Oats. A few years ago, I planted a 1 acre test field. 1/2 acre with BFO the other 1/2 acre with Coker Oats (local Farmers' Coop seed). The field preparation was the same: lime, weed removal, till, waited two weeks, then re-tilled. Seeds and fertilizer broadcast, then we dragged.

Both fields grew well. The deer didn't seem to care about either type of oats until the acorns were running out. Then, they equally feed in both test sides.

My test gave me a few lessons.
1. Mix in other plant seeds: White & Red Clovers and some type of brassica (Dwarf Essex Rape, Turnip, Radish, etc. )
2. Plant which ever winter oat seed is the best price ;o)

They seem to be hitting them daily since they've come up good went and sat there for 3 hours Saturday to scout for juvenile saw 13 does at different times and 2 small spikes hoping my boy will connect Saturday morning.
