Has anyone ever made an oal gauge with a trimmed and drilled out empty case using a thru flash hole rod and o rings? i have part of the idea down pat just curious if anyone ever tried this? thanks
Never made one myself, never saw the need since Stoney Point Did,now sold under the Hornady Name.
It could be better IMO,The through rod could be from stronger material than plastic, and the threads used on the rod and cases could be of a more common size.
I made one that I use but it doesn't use the drilled and tapped case. Mine works from the muzzle end and measures exactly from the bolt face to end of the throat. It's probably a little more of a pain to use with the longer rod but I get the full measurement including any or all headspacing distance for that particular rifle. I usually measure 10 bullets and then take an average and set up the dies according to the proper length bullet right then with a selected and known bullet and I'm confident that they're pretty accurately seated.
