Oak trees

I've been looking at getting some more oak trees to plant in the center if my property to better hold deer. I've looked at mossy oak nurseries and the have a nice package if about 16 trees of different varieties but they are only 10" tall I believe. I know this is not gonna be a plant em now hunt over them this year kinda think but I kinda wanted some that were a little more mature, maybe 5 years old. So where do you guys recommend buying trees? I know lowes had a Shurmur oak and another kind.

I like the Arbor Day foundation. When I planted trees several years ago, they had all kinds of deals on many trees and probably still do. We got some type of package deal where we bought ten trees, and got ten more free. The ten more free trees we chose were sawtooth oaks.

If you want trees that old you may want to look into ball and burlap trees. Its going to cost a pretty penny and your going to have to dig some pretty large holes. Even then most oaks will take many years before they produce with exception of sawtooths and some chinkapins.

Mossy Oak and Realtree should have some big ones,still will take a few years.

And Chestnuts,have some that produced some last year,been 3 years,but I keep em watered,fert,no weeds or grass around them.Basically,baby them.

Thanks guys. I know this is gonna take a while so I'm not looking for anything quick. On the point of the older trees my local lowes has shurmurds that are probably 8 foot tall and they are $20 a piece. I hear shurmurd is a good tree. I am also very interested in getting a chesnut, I've looked at Chinese Chesnut trees so if anyone knows anything about them I would love to hear feedback

Mark some this spring with flagging and return about Feb. Dig em up and move where you want them. Pick some trees that are tall and with narrow crown. Reason being the root system will not be so large most 3 to 5 year old oaks are all tap root with small sucker roots near surface. Don't worry if you cut some of these. Good rule of thump a 5' tree will need to be dug out about a 3' dia around base and about 26" deep. If you don't damage the tap hour golden. Plant same day you dig. Do not put fertilizer in hole! Dried cow manure works great. Fertilizer could burn new root growth in the spring. Good luck!!
