Ok guys I got drawn for the oak ridge shotgun hunt. I've never hunted oak ridge or even know where the areas are and I live only 40 mins away. Any advice or pointers

#1- you can use a muzzleloader on the shotgun hunt.

#2- GO ON THE SCOUT DAY. And scout at least 4-6 spots, you're gonna need 'em.
People will walk right over top of you.

#3- stay in your stand all day unless you make a kill. People come in and out all day. Let them run the deer over you, you stand a much better chance this way. Take snacks/lunch/water. Pee from the stand. Trust me on this one.

the one time i drew the gun hunt, i used a muzzleloader and i had bought a slug gun just for those hunts(since sold it). shotguns are for birds and rabbits

First time at Oak Ridge too Trevor. Scout and get away from others. And stay put. That is my plan.

Shotguns may be for birds and rabbits, but with the right slug the ol 20 gauge will turn a deer a flip, dirt nap!!!

Oak Ridge is hard to get away from other hunters especially since they closed quite a bit of land ,find some thick stuff and like sgtwebb said sit all day.My slug gun shoots as good as my ML if not better plus easier to clean,today's slug guns are not your Grandpa's slug guns Stik, mine is basically a 45 caliber rifle.

If you have a boat, hunt the backside of Haw Ridge. It's the only area you can access by water. And you can scout anytime because its actually not DOE property. It's owned by the City. It is closed to the public during the hunt days. We've taken multiple deer off of it. People will walk in from the front, but it is a LONG hard walk to the back. For what it's worth...

Actually, there are multiple areas that are open to the public during daylight hours, year around. You just have to know where they are....haw ridge, poplar creek, raby road.......all have walking trails you can go on any day of the year which means you can scout any time! Even part of the arboretum is open to hiking any day!

I Forgot about those. Those are excellent places as well! The main reason I mentioned Haw Ridge is the decreased likelihood of someone walking on top of you. Still can happen and has happened, but only had 2 people in 2 days walk up on us. If you want to avoid people, hunt the backside of Haw Ridge by boat, if weather permits...

mine shot fine and it was one of those dedicated slug guns. i still prefer my muzzleloader. you shoot a .410?

That is the very best tactic for Oak Ridge, but also good most everywhere else as well.

All day sits are almost always the most productive on heavily hunted land. That said O.R. is unique in how you can scout some of it yr round, and some areas are only accessible during scout and hunt days. This is an area that it really does pay off by knowing the intricacies of it!

Alright guys after looking closer at the permits my dad got the shotgun hunt and I got the air her hunt on the same weekend. Will we have to hunt different sections or will that matter

Her is the problem I have run into at O.R. , you show up early for scouting day, scout all day and find your spot. The problem is 2 or 3 others will find that same spot throughout the day. Then morning of the hunt the three of you are playing, Rock, Paper, Scissors to see who hunts it. You almost have to stay there all day and chase them off.
Get you hands on a topo of the place and pre scout, find your bottle neck and saddles, creeks, ect. Will save you a lot of time,.

If it is closed to the public, and not part of the WMA, wouldn't you be part of the public on hunt days and illegal? Or, is it part of the WMA but not part of the DOE? Then what area is it in the draws?

I hunted off of a Ridge somewhere in oak Ridge last year. I went off the ridge and hunted a power line and shot 2 deer around 9:00. After i got down and did my business of dragging s and what not, i found that the top of the ridge was covered with hunters, and i think i was the only one that shot anything.
My point is, don't sit on a log right next to the trail on top of the Ridge and look like a dummy as i drag my deer past you.
