Hello all, first post here. I got drawn on a Oak Ridge Hunt for gun. I was fortunate to get a buck tag. I have a few questions if anyone is willing to help me out.

This will be my first hunt at Oak Ridge and I plan on taking my 10 year old with me. This leads me to my first question. Can you hunt deer effectively from the ground at OR? Do most go in with climbing stand or just stalk hunt?

I plan on taking advantage of the scout date (depending on how far my son's football team goes in the play offs, I might not be able to scout the whole day). I understand that getting in deep will most likely be the best answer. Walk farther than others want too.

I would like to stick to about two areas on the map and scout it. Im not after a trophy per say, but want to make sure I see some deer. Any tips anyone could provide would be appreciated!
 
No, I'm not aware of any quotas 10 year olds can enter besides maybe juvi hunts? He can come along though.

FWIW I run through Haw Ridge quite a bit when training for longer distance races and see deer there quite often.

Youths can accompany a permitted adult on the OR gun hunts. As for walking way in, there isnt many areas on the ORWMA where you can really go very far from an accessible road. Haw ridge or the walk in only area on the West end would be the 2 best bets for that. Jones Island rd area will likely be your best bet to simply see deer on the gun hunt. imo
 
Thank you for the information. Just want to get my 10 year old excited about hunting. I took him on his first dove hunt yesterday and he had a blast! Don't want to drag him all over OR and not see a deer.

Do most stalk, or climb in tree stands on OR?

You only want to stalk if you want your kid to learn colorful new words :evil: from people sitting in stands that have been there
since way before daylight. Stand or blind is the way to go. Blind is better as it will hid his movement

Well i do have a pop up blind that will work for us. Guess it all comes down to finding a spot or two to set up at.
 
I've hunted OR successfully many times.
Ground and tree stand.
The key is to scout hard, have several spots lined up, get in absolutely as early as possible, and this part is crucial; stay on stand all day.
Let the morning, midday, late afternoon walkers run the deer over you.
Good luck, we'll be back up there for the December archery hunt.

Thanks for the tips. I'll look around and do my best scouting. I plan on hunting for all the weekend, or as long as I can....
