Oak ID thread?

Someone once posted an oak id thread once upon a time....would be great to have it posted up again!

Chestnut oak has lobed leaves with tight bark. It's a white oak.
Chinkapin has pointed tips and flaky bark. It's a white oak. :grin:

Not to split hairs - Chestnut Oak is in the white oak family but I understand its acorns aren't as highly preferred as other white oaks. Its acorns develop in one year and take root when it drops like other white oaks. You are right about the Chinkapin being white even though it has pointed leaf tips.

That's a lot of different kinds of oaks. I didn't realize there were that many different types in TN. Thanks for the link.
