Small buck chasing an older and much larger doe. Doe ran into a clearing and as I moved to get a shot she backed up so just her head and a few inches of neck were showing. I estimated about 125 yards, slight downhill, Leupold not moving, zip for wind, gentle pressure, doe drops dead. Not any movement at all.
Up runs the spike buck. I already have a round chambered as back up for Mrs. Doe. He goes over to the doe and I cannot see what he is doing and my mind says this is one spike that has sniffed his last sniff. The spike turns and goes about 10 yards further down the hillside.
He clearly sees me. I start to get a sight picture he kind of jumps up and trots back to Mrs. Doe and then back to where he was.
He is still, Leupold is solid, gentle pressure and he is down. No movement at all.
Paced off the distance to Mrs. Doe. She was 132 steps, he was a few steps further. The doe was encased in fat and had a healthy set of backstraps.
