Has anyone ever used one for fishing? I am looking for a canoe to fish the Harpeth and Buffalo as well as to use for recreation with the wife. It looks well designed but just wanted to see if there where any other opinions.

Looks way too small and way too uncomfortable to me. Wait, let me add, way too unstable. Also, no way to mount a T-motor, ergo, way too labor intensive.

In other words, I would not be interested but if I was 23.6 years old, I might.

I believe I'd wait and watch for a used jon-boat and get stability, T-motor mount, more room, more comfort for the same money.

As an aside, in 1975, I bought a 14' Terry john-boat, brand new with a used 9.8 Merc motor and gas can for a total $725. I still have the motor and it is still running. I figure it is at least 40-years old. I gave the boat away years ago. I think it cost $300, new.

This is the boat and my late friend Mickey Pope with a couple Smith Fork smallmouth in 1978.

Well, I'm 27 and I already have a small aluminum boat. I want a good canoe for the small creeks and rivers near the house and camp. Places that arent accessible with a jon boat.
 
My son bought one and we've fished out of it with no problems. He stands up and sits to paddle it and sometimes stands up to fish with no problem at all. When he first got it he didn't have the seat mounts and it was a little crampy to fish sitting down, but after he got the seats mounted it made it very comfortable. With the seats you sit up a little higher. You can mount a trolling motor to the back of it if you want, it has a place for a battery also, it is where he has the black milk crate. He zip tied two rod holders to the mild crate. His is the 12 foot model.

My opinion: The $1,200.00 base price tag, before rigging it out, seems a little steep for what is essentially a large 12 ft tandem sit-on-top kayak. I guess it depends on where you're going to use it.

You can get a 15'4" Gheenoe in the same price range. The stability on the Gheenoes is tough to beat - the downside for river fishing is that they're fiberglass instead of plastic. I think the main issue is whether you want something a little more stable and comfortable (Gheenoe) or whether you need something a little more rugged for getting through areas with a lot of sharp rocks (Nucanoe).

I bought the 15'4" Gheenoe last summer (used for $500) and put a 6 HP Mercury and a trolling motor on it. It's light enough (125 lbs) that it paddles almost as easily as a canoe, yet its 44" beam and reverse-chine sides makes it very stable. I've used it on Old Hickory Lake, the Caney, and the Stones River. I'm seriously thinking of selling my larger jon boat and just using the Gheenoe. I'm definately selling my fishing kayak (on the TNDeer Classified now).

Here's a link to a Youtube of me in it this spring, catching stripe on Stones River. You can see I'm clearly standing up, fighting the fish with one hand while holding the camera in the other. It even more stable with two people, and with nearly 16 ft in length, there's plenty of room. (There's also a 13 ft version with practically same dimensions, except teh transom is wider and the seats a bit closer together. It wold fit better in a truck bed than the 15 footer.)

I'm no expert with canoes but I will say that my favorite canoe I have paddled was an old aluminum square stern. You can put a motor on that easily but I just paddled one. Better than plastic canoes IMO.
 
Thanks for the input guys! I will basically be using it on the Harpeth and Buffalo rivers. I just want something That I can fish from but thats easy to paddle for my wife for when she comes.

I may just go buy a cheap $300 plastic one from academy or Dicks in the meantime untill I decide. I have always liked the Gheenoe's just not sure I want something that big and heavy.
