This old guy was locked down with a yearling doe that was in heat this morning. I took him out of the gene pool. He had a big head and body. #2 down.

That particular deer would be considered an antler less deer, but I feel if a hunter knows it is a buck before shooting, he should therefore feel obligated to check in as an antlered deer.
 
Last year I shot a buck that had one antler that was like a hotdog and the other was about twice as round as a hotdog but had a point coming straight out at 90 degrees. Looked like a deer a preschooler had drawn.

I disagree as the regs clearly state anything less than is considered antlerless. He did his genetic pool a big favor

I shot him at 15 yards under my tree after watching him lock down with a doe for an hour 20 yards from me. Judging his body size, huge head and coat he is an older buck.

I don't see it that way. Unless it qualifies I will check it in as an antlerless deer. I don't see the reason why I should feel obligated to check it in as a buck when it qualifies as an antlerless deer.

I agree that legally it is an antlerless deer and should be checked out as such . But thinking you are doing something positive for the genetics in a free range deer herd by killing him is incorrect .

The only thing that matters was UTgrad wanted to kill him and he is happy with him , which it seems he is . Congrats on the deer !
 
I've never seen a well managed property that didn't take a few cull bucks. I'd like to hear your explanation on why culling is an "incorrect" practice.

studies have shown the antler genetics are passed on by the doe. shooting "cull" bucks will not have a noticeable affect.
 
Good job on culling that ugly turd. Smart thinking. Check in as a doe since u can. I wouldn't use a buck tag on him. It would be stupid to check it in as a buck when u can legally call it a doe.
 
I would have shot him too! I dont know if i believe the doe carries all the genetics thing. The first deer my wife ever killed was a 1.5 yr old button buck. He has 1" buttons and the bases were golf ball size. I think UT Grad made the right call in killing this buck.
 
Since when did members of TNDEER start criticizing people over their kills? He took the time to post a photo, which is the reason a lot of us visit this site 50 times a day.

UTGrad, keep doing your thing, man. A few of us enjoy the posts.

The only measurement that counts for me anymore is the length and width of the back straps.
no deductions for broken antlers they only help get it out of the woods to me
