So... because of work I was only able to hunt with my daughter for opening morning and not been in the turkey woods since. Unfortunate but finally got to me and able to get out this morning. Set up and 3 soft yelps at first light. 10 minutes later a hen showed up looking for another turkey (me). Let her do her thing and call - heard a few other turkeys and sounded like they were heading in. After about 15 minutes heard something behind me. Perfect set up. Hen in front and tom behind. He was coming around the tree to my left (perfect) and then it happened... 3 deer with the lead doe almost literally stepping on me. They got within 8' and all 3 blew at me. They jumped back and continued. Stopped counting after the 60th time they blew - not what I expected and was not ready for that. Needless to say the turkeys were gone. Great experience and good to get out there. Maybe the next time it will actually be a turkey...

I'm right there with you on not getting to hunt, going to give it a try in the morning but more of a deer scouting trip. Hate it didn't work out for you but at least you had some excitement and fun in the woods.
I have deer almost step on me regularly while turkey hunting. I don't mind watching them or even spooking them to be honest. I just hate when they blow. I feel like they scare everything in the woods. Two of the birds I killed this year had deer within 100 yards of me at the time. I always find it interesting how close they will feed to each other and not care.

So did the deer spook the Tom, or were you thinking it was the tom coming in but it was actually deer instead?
I've seen yearling deer chase turkeys around before playing, but the turkeys just seemed annoyed but not spooked.
