As some may know our modern firearm season opened today. Seen several bucks this morning, one I cocked the hammer on the Handi 25-06 but backed it down once I got a better look at him. A decent 9 point 4x5 with some tine length and mass, if he had not been missing that one point I would be done with my one buck tag. The others were 110 inch and down dinks. Total this morning 7 bucks and 14 doe and young. Back out about 2:30 pm and things were slow until near 4 pm. I seen 4 bucks all dinks and dozen doe and young before shooting time ended for the day. None of the bucks were rut crazy, some made half hearted runs at the gals while others just fed around and went on their way. Think one of the does may be close as one 8 point followed her around quite a bit and when she left the field so did he. Predicted for our first freeze overnight tonight so this old man will put another layer on and a fleece facemask for the mile ATV ride over in the morning and pack some handwarmers just in case.
