On of my favorites was my Grandmother's "did you catch anything?" Another one I have heard is a reference to a deer snorting...."they were running thru the woods hollering".

Once my son and nephew were "stalking" one in the back yard and when it snorted, they said Dad the Deer farted!!

Ha! I have friends now that are always asking me, "Did you catch any?" ---- upon my return from a deer hunt.

But my grandparents usually asked, "How many did you kill?" :)
----- Back in the good ole days of "bird" (quail) hunting,
when most men had dogs, and most dogs were either pointers or setters.

While having dinner with me,

With a sudden startled look on her face,
"THIS isn't deer, is it?!?!"

Me: "That's ground sirloin."

Her: "Great, I knew it was too good to be deer".

Me Thinking: "Yep, ground sirloin venison."

Back in the day of film cameras, we would use the same roll of film to take pictures of the kids, holidays, vacations etc as well as any deer I killed. You just kept using the film until it was used up.

When we would go out to my in-laws my wife would grab up all the recently developed pictures (most still in the packs they came in.) My sister-in-law had a come apart on one trip because one of the packs she was looking at had a dead deer picture in it. You would have thought a pornographic picture was in it, by the way she acted.

That brought about the phrase "are there any dead pictures in there?"

No you can't hunt here...

Yeah, but proceeded with a complaint of deer eating their garden or tearing up their trees. On the other hand, after telling me of all the deer he sees every day, my pharmacist offered to let me climb a tree in his yard since he has no woods. I politely declined.

I had a guy tell me his 5 foot fence kept deer out of his apple orchard.

3 weeks later, he asked me why there was white hair on the tops of his fences and what was eating all the apples on low hanging branches.

"Poor little deer"
"How could you kill that deer with those big brown eyes"
"The deer don't have a chance against that rifle"

I hear " how can you shoot those cute little deer" My response is always " I don't shoot the cute one's, only the ugly ones" :)

"HERE'S YOUR SIGN!"...(Hope you didn't say it out loud!)

All the men in family hunt and when we come back home, one of the women will ask 'did you kill anything?' If we haven't killed anything, we all answer TIME!!

After her third bowl of stew a friend of my wife ask if she had just ate Bambi. I replied, "No Bambi's mama."
