No till

Is there any good no till plot mixture you can throw Out. I know this won't be as good as a tiller and prep but I am talking for small areas on wood lines or in woods.So there will be spotty sunlight on some Areas....

If you can roundup and get dirt showing, I have had success mixing wheat and turnips right in front of a rain.

I havent disked or tilled in several years and have had very successful food plots. You also dont lose as much soil and will retain more moisture and nutrients. You have to use things like wheat, oats, rye grain,annual ryegrass and small seeded things like clovers and brassicas. I apply probably twice the recommended seed rates though to account for loss in various forms, thats a con. I simply spray, wait til I know rain is coming and broadcast seed. I will sometimes mow over seed to cover the seed with the "straw", but it breaks down from the spray eventually anyway. This year will be the first year Ive disked in 5 years. And the only reason Im doing that is to lessen compaction from the previous 5 years. So every plot youve seen over the last few years in my pics and trail cam pics has been done this way.

I agree with Steven except the rye grass. I have no tilled with great success, even on larger seed like soybean. Spray, mow, harrow, broadcast, run over with 4-wheeler and pray for rain. Really that easy.

Good points by all and I would add that you can rent a no till drill for a good rate if you check around.

For many years all 5 acres of my food plots were planted with no ground turning at all. None of the plots had ever had the ground turned because it was too hard for most equipment (so hard, we destroyed a brand new disk in just 8 hours of use).

The trick is mowing, spraying with Roundup, using only small seeded plants like brassicas, clover and cereal grains, and as smstone22 mentioned, doubling the recommended seeding rate. And ABSOLUTELY praying for a rain as soon as possible. I've even waited until it was raining to plant. If you don't get rain soon after broadcasting the seed, birds (especially turkeys) will eat all the seed.

You'll get a little something,but,the bad news is, will probably get covered by the leaves in the fall.

One year I planted wheat 3 times and each time the turkeys got it all so I bought a pull behind disc to cover the seed. One of the best stands of wheat I ever got was before the disc - we sowed wheat and clover into the dead grass and a big thunderstorm came just as we were finishing. Rain is so important...

We have 10 really good clover plots this year, and I cringed at the thought of disking and pulling big cultipacker over them...We decided last week to spray them with Clethodim to kill some grass that has come up. Once the grass starts to die, I plan on settng gangs straight on disk and lightly run over it. In front of a rain we'll sow the wheat & brassica, and mow to put a "mulch" on top of seed.
