NO problems with Hornady SST (graphic)

Just for data gathering purposes:

300 gr SST
100gr loose Triple 7
CVA Optima
level shot fired from a ground blind

45 yards

bullet entered just above left shoulder at broadside, found bullet just under skin slightly above right shoulder. Bullet took a thick cross sectional path through plenty of 'meat'

You be the judge of expansion qualities.

Should it be mushroomed more? Do you like bulk retention? No pass through, but this was a 'thick' deer and it was a slightly quartering broadside hit.

No bone impact? Was it bang/flop on the spot? At 45 yards, and a 100 grain load, I would expect pass through regardless of the deer's thickness or angle, unless it impacted dead nuts on both shoulder bones.
Good for you, dead deer. Exactly what you want. Is it me or does it look like the jacket separated from the core a little? I would expect to never find that bullet at that range.

[font:Comic Sans MS]Surprised me too. I was thinking 100gr is about par for the result. It did crunch some ribbage on passing through the cage. I seared the tops of the lungs. But yes, knocked deer down, never got back up. It was in the 'honey spot' high on the shoulder,little back we sometimes talk about that knocks them off their hooves. He only thrashed on the ground for about 30seconds. I'm completely satisfied even without the 'pass through'. Even so, with one hole, he would have left a blood trail that Stevie Wonder could have followed.

So once again, the argument continues, yeah, two holes are great. But also, all of the energy of that bullet was expended into the body of that deer.

You are right about the energy transfer. I bet that deer thought an anvil had fallen out of the sky and landed on it. When I used to hunt with my old TC Renegade .54 and the TC Maxi Hunters I always figured if I just winged one inside of 50 yards two things would happen...They would die from fright from the KA-BOOM and flames and the shock wave of a 1/2" lead hunk at 400 grains would simply suck their insides out.
