Well it's been a busy day. Slow hunt this morning—didn't see anything. Went back this afternoon and settled in at 3:00. I'm hunting an oak flat and it's off the beaten path quite a ways. A decent 8 came in feeding and made a rub—I had decided to take him if he came 4 more steps. Well he stopped and was locked on something back behind me so I was careful to not move too much. Well it was this really nice 8 coming in bowed up walking side ways at the smaller buck. He walked right under my stand and I made a marginal but lethal shot. Decided to wait 3 hours to track him (not much blood after 30 yards) and brought our Boxapoint 1 yr old to help track him. She did ok but got on some other trails. She wound up leading me to some thick saplings and we kind of hit a wall. I was about to give up but said a final prayer and looked 10 ft to my right and there he was! Had not been dead long. Found him at 9:30 and it took about an hour to get him out.
Update—took him to Walker's in Lebanon and they weighed him at 180 dressed. That's a heavy deer for my area.
Oh and it's not fun driving in a huge hay field that's not been cut and has a thick layer of fog 11 o'clock at night. Thank goodness for Hunt Stand app. Couldn't see anything and had to drive using my phone screen and blue dot tracking. Good night!
