Nice spearhead

My son found this in our creek today. He said it was in between two large rocks. It's about 5.5 inches long.
I don't know much about arrowheads. I have only found a few small ones. I told him it was an epic find. Can anyone give me any info on it?

That would be a blade and like stated, it's been reworked. Looks like it's of the Benton variety to me. Awesome find!

Nice! I would agree with Catchdawg on the Benton typing. That's my very amateur guess. That would be right inline with something that would come from your area.

I'd say it's in the Benton family, leaning Elk River. Looks to be made of Hopkinsville chert, which is often times mistaken for Kentucky Hornstone.

Congrats to him! It is an epic find!!!

Then I'd be checking that creek and its banks on a regular basis, especially after rains.

If there are any plowed fields in the area, check them after a good rain. Used to find all kinds of arrowheads, scrapers, pieces of pottery, when I was a kid in eastern NC. Good find!

I think he has the fever! And a good young eye. I told him that someone told me once to look at rocks poking out the side of a creek back. I had told my son that too, one day when we were walking the creek looking for deer crossings. We he went back today and found another one. He said he could barely see a piece of flint poking out. I told him next time that it might be a really nice one. It kinda has a twist in it. I tried to take a picture to show it.

Thats awesome, and I hope he stays with it.
If its not too much trouble, I believe its a good idea to always keep those finds from this particular area, stored and labeled separately from any others you or him might venture to find in the future from a different area.

And might want to be careful who he tells at school where he's finding arrowheads. I would hate for you to have issues in the future.

Great finds!! With more and more no-till planting it's becoming harder to find plowed fields to hunt....I've read up on hunting creeks and several guys will focus on gravel bars that have deposits of smaller rock, dirt banks and wash outs or ditches leading to the creek.....I've tried the gravel bar idea before but just hadn't got the eye for it....yet....good luck to him on future hunts....hope he finds a frame full!!
