We have wood duck on our deer hunting property in Lincoln county. When does the season start and do I need any other license in addition to my TN lifetime license?

It is open this Saturday and Sunday then closes till the following Saturday.
All you will need is your federal duck stamp.
Don't forget to sign it.
Gotta use steel shot too.

my understanding is that you also need to get the free migratory bird permit (it's free with a sportsman's license, at least). I usually get it when I buy my Sportsman's license every year, but I'm not sure about the lifetime license holders.

Also, make sure your shotgun is plugged so that it can only hold 3 shells (2 + 1 in the chamber).

Wood ducks are tasty, but not that big. Be careful about over-cooking them. Many online recipes for ducks often assume you are buying a farm-raised bird from the store, and they recommend higher cooking temperatures due to farm-related diseases (be wary of anything that mentions 150+ degree temps - I usually stop around 130 or so). As with other recipes for things like deer, I recommend medium-rare as the goal for duck. They get tough and start acquiring a liver-like flavor when cooked to well-done. Plucking the birds out is extra work, but you get a lot of extra tasty stuff to eat doing it that way. There's also a way to have a skin-on "fillet" that was shown in a video on...I think Field and Stream's website? You basically pluck out the breast side and legs, ignoring the wings/back (very little meat). Might look that up if you are thinking about smoking them or something.

Your license covers your state duck stamp. With duck/goose hunting, there's also a federal duck stamp that your state license doesn't cover.

Yes, it gets kinda expensive to hunt ducks...

Yep I always forget to mention the migratory bird stamp because I get it with my sportsman license.

Yep duck hunting is about the most expensive habit you can get.

Yea you must use steel any time hunting ducks, public or private

If you have a Lifetime Sportsman's License, you are exempt from the TN Migratory Bird permit.

You will need a federal waterfowl stamp, and will have to sign it in ink across the front of the license. The federal stamp DOES NOT have to be attached to your lifetime license, but must be on your person while waterfowl hunting.

You can (and should) access the TWRA Waterfowl Guide from the TWRA website. That will provide you with the information on seasons, bag limits, shooting hours, etc.

I pick up one of the pocket reg cards, it list wood duck season in September and does not mention a later season. Why is that ? I went to the twra page and looked up the waterfowl regs booklet. i didn't know it existed . It looks like the wood duck season is December till the end of January.

There is a special 2 week season in September for wood ducks and teal only. The limit on woodies then is 2 per person. Now that with tge regular winter season, you can kill 3 woodies per day.
