New Whelen

My wife bought me a Remington 700 in 270 Win for our 5th anniversary 30 some odd years ago. I never could get it to shoot worth a crap so I sent it off to PacNor to become a 35 Whelen. Just got it back yesterday and got break in loads ready to go for tomorrow. Can't wait to see how it does! I'm thinking this will be my rifle for gun season this year!

That's going to be a great hunting rifle and PacNor makes some great barrels so I'm sure it'll exceed your accuracy expectations. :super:

Got to the range today to do barrel break in. Basically loaded up 250 grain Speer Hotcors with 53 grains Varget, didn't chrono yet but should be right at 2,400 FPS. I was impressed, took 3 rounds to sight scope and put remaining 18 rounds within 1.5-2". Not bad for brand new barrel and absolutely no load development, just used Quickload to get a powder charge that would give me the approximate velocity. I may just tweak these loads and call it good.

I'd like to find an older CDL in 35 Whelen. I have no use for one other than wanting one.

A little lite for deer but will work for close shots. :tu:

Seriously that's a nice looking rifle. Nice wife too that would buy you a rifle for a gift. How'd you manage that? Mine always says I have enough gun already and drops it at that.

The Whelen would be a lot of fun to experiment with on deer. Any load you put in it is more than capable of doing the job so you can try them all. I'd tend to load it down some but not a whole lot. After seeing how well my 35 Remington has killed 2 deer with 200 grain cast flat nose bullets at around 2,000 ft/sec, I have no doubt your rifle will get it done.
