The new rules are a result of a declining deer population.

So they made all deer count towards statewide limits except youth deer, and made KY archery limit 1 instead of 2. Seems like will have more effect on KY side, but I guess that is just the result of the 1 buck limit.

If they really want the deer back they need to bring the crops back.

By timber management do you mean continuing to cut 2 out of every 3 oak trees down, burning off the underbrush, and then when the buffalo brush the forest service seems to so desperately desire doesn't grow in its place they burn again and cross their fingers that this time it will work? Why on earth would deer stay on lbl when there are hundreds of thousands of acres of ag crops just outside of it? I will agree they need to get rid of some of the big timber but the way they are doing it is not the right way to go about it if they are truly worried about their deer herd.
To tell the truth if they've gotten to the point that you have to fill out a form stating how many deer you've seen and are that worried about low numbers, it's time to either start dropping the number of hunters drawn per quota hunt, or drop a hunt all together. All these "I got drawn so I'm killing something" hunters are doing noone a favor.

Seriously, does anyone have the dates of the population estimates and kill #'s of LBL? Is there a trend of any kind?

They do need more timber cutting there. Lots of hardwood flats and tons of leaf litter. The corn can't hurt either.

I haven't been up there in several years so I didn't know they had started cutting any timber at all. I agree that a good food source for the deer by row cropping will help but its not the end all to deer hunting.

If row crops are so important to deer herds, why would any deer stay on lbl with a few hundred acres of row crops when there is hundreds of thousands of acres of row crops just outside of it?

And no if the way they are doing it is the way you state it's the wrong way. I'll take a property with a mixture of clear cut, select cut, and old growth timber, with rotational burns over ag property any day of the week.

When all other viable food sources are over head high the deer have to find food somewhere. Clear some of that and let that seed bank see sunlight for the first time in 100 years and the deer will be there

Logging definitely can help increase browse and cover in certain areas. Staff have been logging a good amount of acreage in recent years, but still not a lot when you consider the vast size of LBL. One of the biggest issues in my opinion, is an increase in the coyote population. There are more coyotes in LBL today than ever before, I am certain they are having negative impacts on fawn survival.
