New Rugers

Hey Folks
The new Ruger pistols came out and I was reading the catalog and one said it was ,"Striker Fired". Never heard this before what does it mean ?

Instead of a hammer that swings in an arc on a pin, it has a striker driven in a straight line by a spring. Glock and Springfield XD are striker.
